Short courses

IFM Electric Fishing Training
Our courses are run at Rempstone Village Hall which is just outside of Loughborough and easliy accessible from the M1 and A46. It is also a short taxi journey from Loughbrough station for anyone travelling by train. There are a wide range of accommodation options in Loughbrough and nearby
The course is a good mix of the theory needed to safely use the various methods, coupled with practical demonstrations, health and safety and field skills. We also cover some more advanced techniques for those with some prior experience.
The course utilises both backpack and control box and generator set ups from the main manufacturers
The course is delivered by Paul Coulson ( IFM CEO) and Mike Lee (IFM Course Tutor and Careers Officer) who both have many years experience in the use of electric fishing equipment and training delivery.

The Institute's Certificate Course is the country's leading distance learning course in fisheries management
The IFM Certificate in Fisheries Management provides knowledge to the level required by people aspiring to employment as a technical assistant, water/fishery bailiff or assistant fishery manager in the water industry, or similar positions in commercially run fisheries. It also provides a sound knowledge base for persons interested in running their own fisheries, or who contribute to the voluntary management of fisheries for angling clubs and associations.
The course is organised on a modular basis, and assessed by exams held in January and June of each year.
The course is set at level 3, which is equivalent to the A level in England, Scottish Highers in Scotland and Irish Leaving Certificate at Higher level in Southern Ireland.
On completion of the course students are eligible to progress on to the IFM Diploma Course.

IFM Certificate Course Exams
The next opportunity for IFM Certificate students to sit exams will be the 9th January 2027.
All students enrolled on either the full course or unit only option will be sent the details from Pete Turner, the course manager.
If you have any questions on the exams please get in touch with Pete on certificate@ifm.org.uk
Best of luck to everyone taking the exams

Diploma Course
We continue to run the highly regarded Diploma in Fisheries Management. This qualification is recognised by many employers and entitles their holder to professional status within the Institute. The Institute also publishes a free booklet detailing the possible paths for someone seeking a career in fisheries within the UK. We also run other courses and workshops where you’ll need to attend in person. These are aimed at filling particular skills gaps and are not normally part of a further structured qualification.

IFM Mentor scheme
IFM Training is looking for willing volunteers to take on the role of student mentors for students taking on the challenges of the IFM Diploma and Certificate courses. Our Mentors are a crucial element of our course offer and provide support and guidance to students who may be returning to education after many years. If you would like to join us the details can be found here
Students on our courses are also eligible to apply for a National Union of Students Extra card entitling them to discounts at over 170 retailers.
